Windows offers Backup functions that includes backing up data to an external drive or Microsoft One Drive which is a cloud software that offers 5 GB storage space for a start. This storage can be increased through paid monthly subscriptions which offers up to one terabyte of cloud storage space. Backing up enables retrieval of data upon loss or damage of a device therefore, it is advisable to regularly back up your data.

Use File History to backup to an external drive or network location.

  1. Click on Start​ then choose Settings 
  2. Select Update & Security followed by Backup
  3. Select Add a drive, and then choose an external drive or network location for your backups.

  1. Click on the Start Icon
  2. Open settings
  3. Select Accounts
  4. Choose Windows Backup
  5. Turn on OneDrive folder syncing to enable backing up of your files and folders directly from Settings
  6. Turn on “Remember my preferences” to allow your device backup preferences, passwords and other windows settings.
  7. Turn on “Remember my apps” to allow Windows to remember the apps you have installed and help you restore them from Microsoft Store on your newly acquired devices.

  1. Connect an external hard drive to your computer.
  2. Click the Windows Icon then search for “File History” on the search bar
  3. Choose the drive you want the files to be saved to, then click OK. Click Yes when prompted.
